đThe Oradea CriČ Land Museum - Museum Complex, in partnership with the Bihor County Council, the Oradea City Hall and the Faculty of History, International Relations, Political Science and Communication Sciences of the University of Oradea, is organizing the conference "The Siege of the Oradea Citadel in 1598: the testimonies of Giovanni Marco Isolano and Melchior Von Redern", supported by researcher Dr. Ovidiu CriČtea, from the "Nicolae Iorga" Institute of History in Bucharest. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 5:00 PM, in the Conference Hall of the CriČ Land Museum (Str. Armatei Române no.1/A). The moderators will be Dr. Florina Ciure, Head of the History Service of the CriČ Land Museum, and Prof. Dr. Sorin Sipos, Vice-Rector of the University of Oradea.
đOvidiu Cristea (born June 30, 1965, ConstanČa) graduated in history from the University of Bucharest, Faculty of History, in 1993. In 2003, he obtained his doctorate in history from the "Nicolae Iorga" Institute of History of the Romanian Academy with the thesis Venice and the Straits in the 13th-14th centuries, supervised by Prof. Čerban Papacostea. He was director of the "Nicolae Iorga" Institute of History from 2012 to 2022, currently a researcher.
đ¤The conference held by Ovidiu Cristea aims to demonstrate that the Siege of Oradea in 1598 did not decisively change the course of the "Long War", but represented an important victory for the Habsburgs after recent defeats. In a tense political context, marked by instability in Transylvania and complicated relations between Sigismund Bathory and the Court of Prague, the fortress was defended by a numerically reduced garrison that, for 40 days, resisted with great sacrifices the Ottoman attacks led by SatĂŽrgi Mehmed Pasha. The accounts of the commander Melchior von Redern and Giovanni Marco Isolano provide valuable details about the battles.
Admission is free within the limit of 150 places.
â¨We look forward to seeing you!
